[Rasch] Number of scale points

Hi Rasch gurus -
I remember reading a paper a while back that made the point that long scales, e.g., 100 point scales, were not particularly useful because responses would tend to cluster around simpler numbers. For example, you might see many responses of exactly 70 or 80, but few responses of exactly 73 or 86. Now I can't remember where I read this. Does anyone have a good cite for me?
