[Rasch] Likert scale 'rules'

Hi Trevor –

It’s a bit dated, but Allen Edwards (and colleagues) issued quite a few comparative articles on Likert vs. Thurstone/Guttman methods.

Edwards, A. L., & Kenney, K. C. (1946). A comparison of the Thurstone and Likert techniques of attitude scale construction. Journal of Applied Psychology, 30, 72-83.

It’s been a while since I’ve read it, but if it doesn’t have what you’re looking for, maybe it (or one of Edwards’ other reviews) is a good candidate for forward-referencing… - John

Dear colleagues,
I wonder if you have a list of, or a link to:
Those adamant but often misleading ‘rules’ for drafting Likert scales that are often mandated by researchers who fail to consider the Rasch/empirical evidence.
Eg
Always use odd (or even) n of categories.
Use balanced response options
Use 5-11 categories – no more, no less
Make sure to use negatively worded items to trick unthinking respondents etc etc
Thanks
Trevor
